Council denies million dollar development

Wyndham council has denied an application for a million dollar development of five double storey dwellings in Werribee.

The proposed $1.4 million houses were to be built on the corner of Harriet Street and Thompson Court where a single storey dwelling sits currently.

Council said it received 24 objections from residents relating to traffic and car parking, overdevelopment, neighbourhood character and noise and amenity impacts.

Council officers recommended the application be refused on the grounds of neighbourhood character, energy efficiency and design detail.

Speaking at a council planning meeting on Tuesday, June 14, Werribee resident and objector Nicole Crabtree said she was thankful council recognised the application “isn’t the right development” for the land.

“To hear … that you haven’t supported the planning permit is fantastic,” Ms Crabtree said.

“A block that will have 18 bedrooms, five lounge rooms, plus bathrooms and car parks, it seems to be a really condensed, overpopulated area to be trying to cram into such a beautiful quiet little court.

“[It] doesn’t seem to be an appropriate use of the land.”

Werribee resident Rolando Bustamante said the construction would cause “significant change” to a quiet environment.

“These proposed over-development is not complimentary of Harris Street and Thompson’s Court,” Mr Bustamante said.

“The proposed five double-storey unit has the potential to add a minimum of 10 additional cars to this corner housing block, which will have an impact on the ease of traffic flow.

“This is an area that has a majority of people entering towards retirement life and they have invested a lifetime to ensure a peaceful and quiet life.”
