Wyndham council has approved an application for two residential buildings in Werribee, designed to meet specialist disabled accommodation standards.

The two single storey dwellings will be built in Thompsons Court, after the permit was approved at a council meeting on Tuesday, December 13.

Councillor Adele Hegedich proposed the motion, and said she was very excited that the application for specialist housing had been brought before the council.

“It’s a property that enables participants of the NDIS to live in accommodation that is fit for purpose,” she said.

“The construction of such premises is aimed at not only providing specialist accommodation for people with disability, but it also aims to prevent young people who would otherwise end up in aged care, to live in a purpose built home.

“The homes will look and feel no different from the outside than the standard home within the street, the new neighbours will be no noisier than any of the neighbours currently there, the traffic movements will be no greater than the current [traffic movement].”

Cr Hegedich said the accommodation provided multiple benefits, such as larger bedrooms and bathrooms, wider doors and reinforced ceilings to allow for ceiling hoists.

Cr Heather Marcus was the only councillor to speak against the motion, stating she agreed with many of the objectors who believed the accommodation was needed, but Thompson Court was not the correct location for the type of housing required.

“This is a very lovely court and it has been here in existence for a long, long time, and the people that have built [houses in] this court should be respected as well,” she said.

“I cannot believe that we would even consider a building were people have to share an ensuite, if you work with people with a disability … you would know they need dignity, they need to have their own private ensuite.

“I do not believe this accommodation is appropriate for this area, I do not believe this area has access to existing services and transport services.”
