Company taken to court after man’s death

WorkSafe has charged a roofing truss manufacturer for unsafe work practices at a residential building site in Point Cook, after a man died at a worksite last year.

The company was charged after WorkSafe attended the site following an incident during March, 2020, in which a 35-year-old man died after being struck by a falling steel beam.

Melbourne Truss Pty Ltd has been charged with breaching a section of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, for failing to provide a safe working environment.

In a statement, WorkSafe said: “It is alleged that the company could have taken reasonably practicable steps to reduce the risk to health and safety during the delivery of trusses by ensuring truss bundles were unloaded in a safe unloading zone, workers used appropriate PPE,

crane operators worked from a safe location and truss bundles were attached to a properly balanced sling”.

The matter is listed for a filing hearing at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on September 13.
