Community centre opens in Tarneit

A new community centre built to cater Tarneit’s growing community has been opened by the state government.

Local government minister Melissa Horne and Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly to officially opened the new Bembit Bag-rook Community Centre on October 5.

The $20.9 million centre includes a family area consisting of early learning facilities and consulting suites, as well as an outdoor barbeque area, basketball and netball courts and a playground.

“Over the last eight years we’ve been building a legacy by upgrading parks, playgrounds and libraries for

Victorians, where they’re needed most,” Ms Horne said.

“Our suburbs are great places to live, work and play and we’re making sure they stay that way by investing in the things communities deserve.”

Backed by a state government investments worth $5 million from the Growing Suburbs Fund and Building Blocks Grants program, the project is one of 30 projects the state government has funded with Wyndham City Council.

“It’s exciting that the Tarneit community now has a new space for sport, recreation and family support services, that will be enjoyed for generations,” Ms Connolly said.

The Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation worked with Wyndham City Council to name the Centre – in the Bunurong language “Bembit” means flower and “Bag-rook” means women.

The state government said Growing Suburbs Fund the Government continues to invest in critical infrastructure projects in the Wyndham area, recently announcing support for a redevelopment of the Galvin Park Football Cricket Community Pavilion and a new family recreation space at Alfred Road Reserve.
