Wyndham council has announced the new family centre currently under construction in Manor Lakes will be named the Birnbial Family Centre.

Birnbial, pronounced Bin-beel, is the Wadawurrung word for rainbow.

Council says the name reflects the aspiration for the family centre to promote bright futures for a diverse and emerging community.

“We thank the community for their feedback to help us find a name for this wonderful new family centre which will provide essential services close to home,” Wyndham mayor Susan McIntyre said.

Residents voted on a name for the new $8.2 million centre, and the shortlist of names was compiled in consultation with the Registered Aboriginal Party, the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation.

“Wyndham city is committed to working towards reconciliation, and the selection of a name emerging from Wadawurrung language is an important acknowledgement of the Aboriginal heritage of our city,” Councillor McIntyre said,

The Birnbial Family Centre will open in early 2023 with three and four-year-old kindergarten, maternal child health, a toy library and other family support services.
