Club’s massive clean-up campaign

Players, coaches, staff and volunteers from Point Cook Centrals have picked up a whopping 135 kilograms of rubbish in their local area.

Senior football coach Dean Chambers said that the players gathered on Sunday, November 7 for a meet and greet.

The club members met at one of their sponsors, The Brook Hotel.

Arm with plastic bags and gloves, they divided up into small groups and spent an hour picking up litter from in and around their home ground at Featherbrook Reserve.

“When groups returned we weighed in all the rubbish collected – total weight was 135 kilograms,” Mr Chambers said.

“It’s sad really to think there was so much rubbish collected in only one hour.”

The club’s new recruits joined in the clean-up effort, along with recently-appointed assistant coaches Alan Williams and Gary Buckley.

Mr Chambers said he and the assistant coaches wanted to instill the value of respect in the club, relating to “who we are and the role we play within the community”.

“As part of our new culture we want to become more community focused with our care own-do attitude,” Mr Chambers said.

He said the weekend event was the first time that Point Cook Centrals has conducted a rubbish collection activity.

“The group thought it was a fantastic initiative and they were overwhelmed of how much rubbish was collected in such a short period of time,” he said.

Mr Chambers said Point Cook Centrals was very much an all-inclusive sporting club with both football and netball.

“We are all for supporting and working with for our local community – men, women, boys and girls – we want our local community to embrace our club, whether they join our club or we would welcome to see as many families attend our home games as a social gathering,” he said.
