Safety works for K Road cliffs

Erosion at the K Road Cliffs has prompted the need for public safety works to be carried out at the Werribee South tourist attraction.

The cliffs will undergo a $109,000 state government-funded safety upgrade after two reports commissioned by Wyndham council revealed that natural erosion and the age and condition of trees at the site meant work was needed to improve safety.

The council intends to push back the existing cliff-side fence at least five metres and then install signage informing the public the area outside the fence is out of bounds.

Meanwhile, several of the more mature and unstable high-risk trees along the cliffs will be removed or reduced in size.

Any trees removed will be replaced.

Tourist attraction

The K Road Cliffs is popular among tourists and walkers for its views of the Werribee River.

Wyndham councillor and environment and sustainability portfolio-holder Peter Gibbons said the works would make the cliffs a safe tourist destination for years to come.

He said work would begin following consultation with residents and stakeholder groups and was expected to be completed by the end of September.

“Reports detailing the current state of the cliffs have found that some of the trees are at risk of falling into the Werribee River, dragging other trees and part of the cliff edge with them,” he said.

“That, along with potential public safety concerns, is one of the reasons these works are so important.”
