Just saying ‘thanks’ to the Cancer Council doesn’t cut it for year six Stella Maris Catholic Primary School pupils Sofia, Ziva and Olivia, who have opted to snip their locks instead.
The chop will take place on December 9, at the school’s Christmas market, and the donated hair will then be made into wigs for people who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment or other illnesses.
“I did this three years ago and I wanted to do it again,” Olivia said.
“It feels good to help others who are going through a hard time. My cousin had cancer and cutting my hair is a way for me to connect and support her and others who are losing their hair.”
Ziva said she is excited to support people with cancer and the event is a great way to bring people together to raise money and awareness.
Sofia said she wanted to use her hair to “help people with cancer so that they feel beautiful”.
“I didn’t want to waste my hair and I felt this is my way of helping cancer patients,” she said.
The school’s deputy principal discovery and encounter Nella Garrasi said she is “very proud” of the pupils.
“We are developing ‘regenerative’ thinkers who have a sense of purpose, hope and love, and have the confidence to think, feel and act in regenerative ways to the challenges of our time,” she said.
