The new Cherry Street carpark mural has been given a tick of approval by locals.

The artwork, which was unveiled at the Werribee carpark about a week ago, has been dubbed “awesome”, “better than Wezza”, and “$6000 well spent” by residents on Wyndham’s Star Weekly Facebook page.

Lorraine added: “Love it!! Representing the coast and sea, plus birdlife of Wyndham, in a beautiful mural. Thank-you for doing it justice. So pleasing to look at this. Well done.”

Ocean Grove artist Justin Stone said the council brief was for an art work that represented Werribee.

Stone said the mural paid homage to the wetlands, the Werribee River and Wyndham’s proximity to the coast.

The 35-year-old said the Cherry Street carpark wall was one of the biggest canvases he’s ever had to work on.

Wyndham council paid Stone $6000 for the installation – $1000 for the design, and $5000 for the actual art work.

A Wyndham council spokesman said the sum is in line with fees set by the National Association of Visual Artists, which sets the industry standards for payment of artists.

The mural replaces the infamous ‘Welcome to Wezza’ work done by students from Wyndham Community and Education Centre, a graffiti-style mural that drew a slew of online praise and criticism.
