An indoor cricket competition in Hoppers Crossing next month will raise money for the Mother Baby Unit at Werribee Mercy Hospital.
The event will be hosted by the Hoppers Indoor Sportz Centre and not-for-profit organisation Stay Well, which was founded by Tarneit’s Kapil Thakkar.
He said he established the organisation to encourage healthy living.
Mr Thakkar, who also volunteers at Werribee Mercy, said he first heard about the Mother Baby Unit during a meeting at the hospital.
“The Mother Baby Unit is an inpatient unit, providing care for mums who have a mental health condition and their babies,” he said.
Mr Thakker said he was inspired to organise an event to raise money for the unit, and decided on a cricket competition, the Stay Well Charity Cup.
“In addition to awareness of the Mother Baby Unit, we’re also raising awareness of indoor sport, staying active and getting people healthy, so that’s what I’m looking forward to,” he said.
The opening game of the cup will be held between two women’s teams.
Mr Thakkar said he hoped a total of 12 teams would sign up for the cup, which will be held on Sunday, September 9, from noon to 6pm, at Hoppers Indoor Sportz Centre, 13/55 Graham Court, Hoppers Crossing.
Cost: $30 per individual in a team or $180 for a team of six.
