Do you have what it takes to become a firefighter? Or are you keen to have a stickybeak around a fire station and pop into a fire truck?

Hoppers Crossing Fire Brigade is giving residents the chance to do both next week when it opens the doors of its fire station for an open day and recruitment drive.

The open day will run from 10am-noon on October 14 at the Hoppers Crossing branch, 119 Derrimut Road, Hoppers Crossing. Attendees can park across the road at the AquaPulse car park.

CFA volunteer Peter Habersatt said the morning is a chance for locals to find out more about what the brigade does in the community and will have firefighters on hand to meet and offer tips ahead of the bushfire season as well as advice for those keen to become firefighters.

Visitors can also go behind the scenes at the station and jump into one of the fire trucks. There will also be firefighting demonstrations, a free sausage sizzle and children’s activities.

Hoppers Crossing Fire Brigade, which celebrates its 40th birthday this year, has more than 50 members and averages about 1500 call-outs each year, making it one of the busiest CFA stations in the state.

The brigade will host a reunion later in the day, with up to 100 past and present members expected to attend.
