Wyndham SES volunteers attended the scene of a kitchen ceiling collapse in Hoppers Crossing on the weekend.
On Sunday, the SES received a call to say that the ceiling of a Comben Drive house had crumpled inwards.
Four SES members arrived at the house to find the ceiling had partially collapsed and was resting on top of the residents’ refrigerator.
The SES unit’s community engagement officer Gerry Greenwood said the volunteers decided to remove the roofing plaster and the insulation bats, using tools including a reciprocating saw and a staff.
However, as soon as work commenced, the ceiling “came crashing down in the entire kitchen area”.
“This was a big task removing all the plaster and filling large plastic bags with the insulation material,” Mr Greenwood said.
Mr Greenwood said that it appeared there were no nails holding up the plaster, but only “a few blobs of glue”.
He said the SES volunteers believed this had contributed to the ceiling’s collapse.
