A fundraising campaign to fit out Werribee Mercy Hospital’s new critical care unit has nearly reached half of its target.
Earlier this year, the Werribee Hospital Foundation and the Mercy Health Foundation created an appeals committee to raise $2 million over the next 18 months to fit out the unit with radiology and monitoring equipment, ventilators, defibrillators and furniture.
As of last week, $850,000 had been raised.
The committee most recently received a $10,000 donation from Werribee Chinese restaurant Master Wok, which was also one of many local businesses to donate when the new Werribee Mercy Hospital was built in 1994.
Co-owner Ringo Wong said locals had supported his business for the past 35 years, and he wanted to give back to the community.
“The local public hospital is very important to the people of Wyndham and many families will benefit from the expansion,” he said.
The CCU will have eight critical-care beds and is part of an $85-million state government-funded hospital upgrade that will include 56 inpatient beds and six operating theatres over four storeys.
Werribee Mercy is close to achieving its goal of 32 donations for the campaign in three months. The challenge, which ends on June 30, is at 27 donations.
