Debbie MacLeod says that anyone hoping to pursue a career in childcare and education should have a passion to work with children, a playful sense of humour and plenty of patience.
These words of wisdom come from a good source, as Mrs MacLeod has been named the National Educator of the Year, at the Family Day Care Australia annual industry awards.
Mrs MacLeod, of Hoppers Crossing, said she was left “stunned” by her award.
She has been a family day care educator for more than 28 years and is registered with Wyndham Early Learning Family Day Care.
Mrs MacLeod said the support of Wyndham Early Learning, and also her past and present childcare families, meant a lot to her.
“Working in this industry is so rewarding, being a part of the children’s growth in knowledge, skill and personality is amazing,” she said.
Mrs MacLeod said one of the funniest moments of her career happened when she was sitting at a play table with cups of tea and cakes, with a boy who stated he was playing while his parents were at work.
He then said: “Oh Debbie doesn’t work, she just sits and drinks tea with me all day.”
Mrs MacLeod told the boy that her job involved helping him, doing crafts and activities, playing and going to the park.
“He came back quick smart, ‘Yes but that’s all fun things, not working’,” Mrs MacLeod said.
