Big-hearted and enthusiastic Wyndham residents have raised almost $200,000 for the Cancer Council of Victoria in this year’s Relay for Life.

Almost 3000 people flocked to the Victoria University athletics track where they walked or ran for 24 hours to support Cancer Council research, support and prevention services.

Victorian Governor Linda Dessau visited the track in a relay-first to open the event after hearing Wyndham entrants talk about the event.

“I met people from the Wyndham relay at a function at Government House,” she said. “I told them I would love to attend.

“This event raises an extraordinary amount of money, bringing the community together to reflect on those loved and lost, while also supporting those going through cancer treatment right now. You’re all doing a terrific thing.”

Wyndham Relay for Life chairman Brendan Andrew thanked the event’s 96 teams that had – at the time this newspaper went to print – collectively raised $193,849.

Cancer Council of Victoria chief executive Todd Harper said the event brought hope for the future.

“The work the Cancer Council does could not be possible without you relayers,” he said.

The team at Star Weekly proudly took to the track for the entire 24-hour period, raising more than $2200.

Star Weekly would like to thank and acknowledge the generosity of Werribee Mazda, Godings and Philocoffee Espresso Bar for their support.
