Wanted: Justices of the Peace to serve at Wyndham’s police stations.
The state’s justice department is on the hunt for Justices of the Peace, or JPs, who can donate an hour of their time each month at either the Werribee or Wyndham North police stations.
Justices of the Peace are volunteers that authorise and witness documents, including statutory declarations, affidavits and certified copies.
Werribee and Wyndham North police stations are among the busiest for JPs in the state, with nearly 95,000 documents signed in 2016 alone.
JP Trish Vejby said she could sign up to 300 documents in a single shift.
She said currently, members of the public were waiting up to an hour to have their documents certified and anyone with more than 20 signatures required is being encouraged to make an appointment.
“We’d like to be in a position where we can have two JPs on per shift, because it is very busy,” she said.
“If you’re able to give an hour a month, or more, at the police station, we’d love to hear from you.”
A core group of 11 people operate as JPs across the two stations.
Ms Vejby has been a JP for nearly 25 years and says it was a good way to help the community.
“I worked in a big legal firm, and I was sitting on a justice committee, and it seemed to be a good idea.”
If you’re a Justice of the Peace and want to offer your services at the Werribee or Wyndham North police stations, call Trish, 0417 354 737 or Rob, 0407 974 944.
