Truganina’s Cameron Gatt is hoping to make it third time lucky when he takes on the BMX world championships in the US this year.
The eight-year-old will battle it out against the world’s best in South Carolina this July after winning his first national championship in Brisbane recently.
Mum Michelle said Cameron gave his all at the competition.
“It was really full-on, they just pumped [the competitors] through one race after another, he didn’t have time to sit down between motos.
“His legs were like jelly by the end. When he crossed that finish line, he couldn’t stand up, he worked that hard.”
While Cameron was happy to take out his first national championship, he has his sights set on bigger things.
“It’s my dream to get W1 – world number one,” he said. “This was a step to getting there.”
Cameron, who placed third at his first world championships in 2015, is particularly keen to right the wrongs of last year’s world championships, where he broke his collarbone during his warm-up. The injury put him out of action for four months.
Cameron competes with Geelong Thunder BMX club and trains up to five times a week under the guidance of father and son team Fraser and Brandon Te Hiko.
