The local government watchdog needs to get “a wriggle on” in its investigation of Wyndham councillor Intaj Khan, local MP Bernie Finn said last week.
The Western Metropolitan MP said the Local Government Inspectorate’s investigation into Cr Khan’s 2016 election campaign needs to wrap up quickly.
In January, a joint investigation by Star Weekly and The Sunday Age revealed Cr Khan ran a campaign that allegedly included dummy candidates with bogus enrolment addresses and false occupations to ensure his own victory.
“The concern from the local community is still at its peak,” Mr Finn said.
“Given it is now getting on to the end of March, my view is that there has been ample time to examine this matter in a sufficient way.”
Chief municipal inspector David Wolf confirmed the Inspectorate is still investigating last year’s election.
“It is a complex matter and it is not possible to give time frames at this stage,” he said.
Wyndham council chief executive Kelly Grigsby said the Inspectorate had been in touch with the council seeking information. She said the council had fully co-operated and is anticipating an outcome will be reached.
A state government spokesperson did not respond to Star Weekly’s questions, instead sending through a definition of the Inspectorate’s role.
