Call for off-leash dog park

Locals are calling on Wyndham council to install another off-leash park in Tarneit.

Aijaz Moinuddin said that many dog owners would like to see Butterfly Boulevard Park converted to a dog park.

“Many Tarneit families own dogs, and there is a clear lack of safe spaces where dogs can exercise freely,” he said

“Without a proper facility, many owners are forced to use walking paths and playgrounds, which has led to incidents and concerns.

“A dog park is more than just a pet facility – it shows Tarneit values family life, recreation, and community wellbeing.”

Mr Moinuddin said that a dog park would go a long way in making the suburb more liveable.

“It would reduce conflict in shared spaces, make parks safer for children, and improve lifestyle options for residents.

“This makes Tarneit a more attractive and liveable suburb for current and future families.

A Wyndham spokesperson said the council doesn’t have the funds at the moment for the project due to the state government’s rate capping.

The spokesperson said there are no new off-leash dog parks funded in this year’s budget, but the construction of dog off-leash parks that were started in 2024/25 or are supported by state government grants will continue.

A state government spokesperson said the rate cap provides relief for ratepayers, as rates across the state could rise as much as six per cent before the policy was introduced.

Star Weekly understands councils can apply for exemptions if they can demonstrate projects or services that would cause them to exceed the cap would benefit their constituents.
