Business wants a bite of Cherry

Business parking permits for Werribee’s new Cherry Street carpark are being snapped up –but there’s still some for the taking.

Wyndham council has received 60 applications for business parking permits at the new carpark and has approved every one to date.

Wyndham council economy, innovation and liveability director Kate Roffey said the permits were “proving to be very popular”.

“We initially offered one permit per business to give as many businesses as possible the opportunity to apply for one,” Ms Roffey said.

“We have since issued multiple permits to businesses that have requested them.

“At this stage, it’s too early to determine exactly how many parking permits council will issue for the Cherry Street carpark.

“We’re giving priority to businesses that don’t already have general business parking permits, but we will also consider applications from other businesses.”

Granting of the business parking permits follows a Star Weekly article revealing that the new Cherry Street carpark was sitting largely unused a month after opening to the public, with drivers opting to park along a neighbouring street and on a vacant block of land.

The carpark, which opened on August 15, has 76 spaces for business parking permit- holders and 31 spaces for the public to use for up to three hours.

Werribee CBD employees are forking out $11.90 a month for the permits, which will be valid until June 30, 2017.

The council will consider the future of the business parking permit system as part of its Werribee City Centre Parking Strategy, with the draft strategy expected to be released for community consultation early next year.
