Melbourne has been named the city with the highest number of burglaries, a new report has found.
The study, conducted by Budget Direct, analyzed break-in crime data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics from January-December 2020.
Melbourne recorded 11,276 burglaries across the year, with 1790 of them occurring in February, Victoria’s worst month for break-ins.
The winter months saw the lowest burglaries, July ranking the lowest at 840 recorded break-ins.
Australia has the 7th highest rate of burglaries per 100,000 people in the world, and in 2021, almost 240,000 households experienced a break-in.
“Home security along with general safety is so important within our day to day lives. A home break-in is a very stressful event in anyone’s life and unfortunately break-ins can occur at any given time as shown by our study,” Budget Direct’s Chief Growth Officer Jonathan Kerr said.
“It’s therefore important that residents ensure their properties are as secure as possible to deter burglars, whether it’s fitting a security system with alarms or cameras or simply improving lighting around the house.”
