It started out as a joke, and turned into an unlikely fundraiser.
Bruno’s Deli and Cafe in Werribee has been displaying bras for the past year in a unique bid to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research.
It all started when customer Ian Domoney was in the cafe with a group of friends and the group decided to play a prank on owner Mario Muraca. The men threw an old bra up next to a display of tea towels and aprons and waited to see how long it would take Mr Muraca to notice.
“It was just for a bit of fun,” Mr Domoney said.
Mr Muraca said it took him a couple of days before he noticed the bras, then he decided to keep them up and encourage other customers to throw their old bras up too.
“Breast cancer touches all people in one way or another,” he said.
Mr Muraca said many customers were initially confused to see the bras, but many thought it was a great idea. The prank raised more than $260 for the Breast Cancer Network Australia.
“Now we have to do something for the men,” Mr Muraca said.
