When Werribee’s Blake Misfud and a friend were dropped off at Wyndham Harbour on September 28, it was for another afternoon fishing, the type the 14 year old has been partaking in since he could walk.
But soon after casting out into Port Phillip Bay, Blake realised this wasn’t another routine afternoon wetting a line.
“When it started taking all my line and the drag
starting going,” said Blake of when he knew one of his first bites that Thursday was from something very big.
Seven minutes of reeling and wrestling later, Blake’s hunch proved correct as he hauled in a monstrous, 4.1kg, 78 centimetre snapper.
“Biggest fish i’ve ever caught,” said Blake of the fish which is considered one of the largest ever caught in the area, especially from land.
The elation didn’t last long though. Having wrestled the huge fish out of the water, Blake and his mate were left with another conundrum: what to do with it?
He got on the phone to his brother in law who’d only just dropped them off.
“About 20 minutes later I called him telling him he needs to come back with a bigger esky and net as I couldn’t fit the fish in the esky I had!
He didn’t believe until he seen me sitting on the footpath with the fish.”
As for the giant snapper’s whereabouts now?
“I have wrapped it up in a towel and put it in the freezer as I want to get it taxidermied but can’t find anyone available,” said Blake.
A dilemma many fisherman would be happy to have.
