Wyndham council has stressed that it consulted “extensively” before deciding to reduce the size of residential waste bins.
But the council will not reveal how many residents took part in the consultation process.
Residents are up in arms over the council decision to reduce residential waste wheelie bins from 140 litres in capacity to 120 litres. It’s part of the council’s new waste and litter strategy, which also includes redeveloping the transfer station at the Werribee tip by 2020 and rolling out subsidised green waste bins to all properties.
The bin changes won’t be made until at least 2018 when the council’s current waste collection contract expires.
In response to online feedback,
Star Weekly asked Wyndham council last week to detail the consultation process and how many residents took part.
Sustainable development director Dean Rochfort said that between January and March this year, the council ran a six-week consultation process on the changes.
He said the strategy was promoted “extensively” through
Wyndham News, which is delivered to all homes in the municipality, the council’s website and social media pages, e-newsletters and community centre drop-in sessions.
Mr Rochfort did not reveal how many residents took part in the consultation.
