An old motocross track at Laverton North will soon be back in use to help motorcyclists hone their skills.

Wyndham council has approved a planning permit to reuse the existing track at Lawrie Emmins Reserve. The track was opened in the early 1970s but closed in 2010.

The site will now be redeveloped to make it compliant with Motorcycling Victoria’s safety regulations and guidelines. The industry body will manage the track.

Hoppers Crossing resident Josh Spiteri is looking forward to returning to the track he learnt to ride on.

“I’ve been riding dirt bikes since I was two,” he said.

“My old man used to take me to the Laverton North track when I was a kid, so it’ll be great to see the track back open again. It’s hard to explain what I love most about riding – I suppose it’s the adrenaline rush from going fast and hitting jumps.”

Mr Spiteri says he still rides “a few times a week” but is frustrated he has to drive to Bacchus Marsh or Broadmeadows to use his bike.

Cr Peter Maynard, who holds council’s sport, leisure and open spaces portfolio, said there was a need for a track in Wyndham. “People need a place to ride safely and learn to ride in a controlled environment.”

Cr Bob Fairclough said he echoed this sentiment.
