Big step forward for walking group

The Werribee Bushwalking and Outdoor Club will celebrate a special milestone with a barbecue open to past and future members.

On August 14, the group will celebrate its 40th anniversary.

Elise Kisyma joined the club 17 years ago and said the group provides people with a gentle form of exercise.

“We enjoy exploring our natural environment and provide a safe and inclusive way for people new to bushwalking a chance to experience the places of beauty we are surrounded by,” she said.

“Add to this the soothing benefits of fresh air, bird song, the occasional sound of flowing water and, of course, those rewarding natural views.”

Ms Kisyma said there has been times when the club experienced a dip in numbers, but members have valiantly managed to keep it going.

“We have attracted new members who have enriched and invigorated the group,” she said.

“It is a credit to those who came before us and those who will hopefully come after us that we celebrate our 40th anniversary and look forward to the future.”

Anyone who is interested in joining the group is encouraged to attend a walk to get a feel for the club.

“We recommend new walkers bring is water (1-2litres), good hiking footwear, sun protection in the summer, rain jacket, first aid kit, walking poles if the terrain is listed as challenging, lunch, snacks,” Ms Kisyma said.

“We are also a very social group having introduced spin off groups such as a photography (shutterbug) group, a cuisine group that explores foods from different nationalities and the occasional cycling group.”
