A push to encourage parents to walk their children to school has paid off for Bellbridge Primary School.

For the second consecutive school term, Bellbridge has been named Bicycle Network Victoria’s most active Victorian school.

Students and teachers were awarded the network’s Golden Wheel trophy after it was found 64 per cent of pupils walk or ride to school every day – almost three times the national average.

Grade 5 teacher Belinda Onofretchook said three different one-kilometre routes to the school were mapped out last year.

Since then, parents have been asked to either drop their children off or walk them along these routes each day.

“We’ve had really good support from parents,” she said.

Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said the state government recommended that children spend at least an hour a day playing sport and no more than two hours a day on electronic media, including watching television.
