Big aims for small parks

Up to 200 pocket parks across Wyndham could be re-activated under a councillor’s plan to spruce up older parts of the city.

Councillor Mia Shaw said residents could expect to see more money put towards upgrading pocket parks across the city in the 2017-18 council budget, particularly in older parts of Wyndham such as Hoppers Crossing and Werribee.

She said the smaller parks could benefit from a range of upgrades, including park benches, new play or exercise equipment and public toilets.

Another concern is ensuring that the parks are accessible for families with prams and people with disabilities.

“I will be asking our CEO to bring a number of areas of council staff together to see what principles, funding and other work we need to do to really kick goals and improve local parks, family and community connections and street parties in Wyndham,” she said.

“There are approximately 200 local parks that will be reviewed to prioritise implementing a landscape capital improvement program, subject to budget approval.

“Council has started doing some of that work … for me, it’s about re-activating these spaces for the community. Many of them need a facelift.

“I think we need to look at the accessibility of them. Are the footpaths connected? Are there the right crossings for families with pushers or prams?”

The comments come after Cr Shaw called on residents to take pride in their front nature strips.
