Two young Werribee residents have been selected to represent Australia at an international softball tournament.
Jye Robinson and Noah Cooney, who both play at the Werribee Softball Association, have been selected for the national under-15 Australian softball team.
They have been invited to attend the Softball Australia International Friendship Series in Queensland from July 5 to 12.
Jye and Noah said they became involved with softball at about the age of six or seven years old, as both of their mothers played the sport.
The boys both said they were surprised to find out that they had been selected for the national squad.
“It was hard to believe, I was a bit speechless,” Noah said.
“I was like, ‘Oh wow’, I wasn’t expecting it,” Jye said.
He and Noah said they became involved with softball at around the age of six or seven years old, as both of their mothers played the sport.
The two boys also play football for the Werribee Districts Football Club.
Jye said he was hoping to pursue a career in football, while Noah said he was interested in a career in softball.
“I wouldn’t mind being a high-level player or a coach, just passing on the knowledge I’ve learned throughout the years,” he said.
Jye said that in the past, a business owned by his uncle and aunt, LMF Constructions in East Keilor, had sponsored him to play in state-level softball tournaments.
Both Noah and Jye’s families are hoping other businesses in the west will want to sponsor them for the International Friendship Seriesm top help out with equipment, accommodation and travel costs. Contact Jye’s father Jamie on 0435 911 839 for details.
