Do you want to have your cake and help raise money for Ukrainian children too?
Point Cook resident Colleen Serracino was inspired to host a community bake sale after a UNICEF fundraiser posted on social media caught her attention.
“I had read a little bit about what’s going on over there, we all know about the war, and by raising $500, 76 children will have an education [and] they’ll be given school supplies,” she said.
“As much as the cakes sell [for], that money will go directly to UNICEF…it might not sound like a lot of kids but it is, it’s going to make a big difference in not just the children’s lives, but their families as well.”
The bake sale will be held on Sunday, May 29, from 11.30am-1.30pm at the Saltwater Community Centre, and will feature a variety of homemade cakes and slices, and cultural desserts.
“I had no idea that we had some Ukrainian families in the estate…they’re going to make traditional Ukrainian sweets which will probably be something people haven’t tried before,” she said.
Ms Serracino said she’s lucky to live in a community where “everyone” just seems to “step up”.
“Everyone gathers around and tries to make it work, so it’s not just me, I knew by putting something like this forward that something good will come of it,” she said.
“It is a big ask in times like this, we all have our struggles…just the little things can make a big difference. “
