Badminton centre proposed for Point Cook

A proposal to develop a $2.35 million indoor badminton facility in Point Cook has been lodged with Wyndham council.

The planning permit application is seeking permission to construct the sports centre, along with 38 car parks and 12 bicycle spaces, at 16 Wallace Avenue.

If approved by the council, a building capable of holding up to 53 patrons will be erected on the site.

The proposal includes plans for a reception area, a pro shop, a store, a tea room, a toilet for people with a disability and female and male change rooms.

The facility’s proposed opening hours are 10am-10pm Monday to Friday and 9am- 9pm Saturday and Sunday.

The centre would generally be staffed by about two staff people at a time and up to six people during twice-yearly badminton tournaments.

A design response report, submitted to the council by Town Planners Melbourne along with the planning application documents, states the proposed badminton facility and parking capacity “have been reached through careful consideration of adjoining properties and the nature of the site and its use”.

“It reflects a high standard of design, which strikes a balance between supporting community health and well-being and employment opportunities whilst protecting the amenity of the local area,” the report reads.

“The anticipated peak traffic flows generated by the proposed development is considered to be minimal and able to be adequately accommodated on the surrounding road network during the development’s peak periods, which will typically occur outside of the commuter peak periods.”
