Werribee Mercy Hospital is in the midst of a baby boom.

A record 3711 babies, including 26 sets of twins, were born at the hospital during the 2015-16 financial year.

That’s up from 3144 bubs in 2014-15 and 2739 births in 2013-14.

The birth rate is rising in tandem with Mercy Health’s three-year commitment to increase the hospital’s birthing capacity by 20 per cent a year.

Mercy Health chief executive of health services Linda Mellors said the hospital was on course to welcome about 74 babies on average per week in 2016-17.

Dr Mellors said the maternity ward had been expanded to cater for the rising demand.

The hospital has brought on board new consultant obstetricians, obstetric registrars, midwives and support staff to support the growth.

“We have also opened additional birth suites and postnatal beds, and upgraded equipment.”
