Police are appealing for information after a man armed with a knife committed two attempted robberies in Werribee on the weekend.
Detectives from Altona North Embona Taskforce are investigating the incidents, the first of which occurred on Saturday night around 6.50pm.
A 32-year-old man was walking in a small grassed area, near a supermarket carpark at the corner of Cherry and Watton Streets, when he was confronted by a man carrying a knife.
Around 10 minutes later, a man and woman were walking along Cherry Street, when an offender attempted to grab the woman’s handbag.
The offender produced a knife and demanded the bag, but the 48-year-old woman was able to seek shelter in the doorway of a nearby business and call Triple-0.
The offender ran away and the woman’s partner chased him across the train line, into Railway Ave and Glen Street.
Police attended the scene but were unable to locate the offender, who was described as 165 to 170cm tall with facial hair. He was wearing a black hoodie and dark pants.
Police said they had also received reports of a man matching this description loitering in the Cherry Street area, before the two attempted armed robberies occurred.
Police said they believed that the two attempted armed robberies may have been committed by the same man.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
