Olympian Anne Cross is gearing up for the longest race of her running career.
Known for her expertise in the 5000 metres, the Wyndham Vale resident will be running considerably further when she tackles the 42.2-kilometre New York Marathon this weekend.
Ms Cross, who battled breast cancer eight years ago, said she’d always dreamed of running a marathon.
“I didn’t really think I could, or would, so I’m really happy that I’ve been able to get through all of that and be clear now for eight years.
“I’ve never ever done a marathon, I’ve done every race from 100 metres through to a half-marathon, but never a marathon.
“It’s a perfect opportunity; it’s always been on my bucket list.
“I’ve never been to New York either, so this trip enables me to cross two things off my bucket list at once.”
Ms Cross started training for the marathon in May, running 15 kilometres twice a week as well as a long run of up to 38 kilometres each week.
“All the work’s been done now,” she says.
“I want to be able to run under four hours but the whole bucket list goal was just to complete a marathon and really enjoy it.
“When I did the Sydney Olympics, that was a real buzz and I can imagine this will be similar.”
Ms Cross, who works as a senior sales consultant at Werribee’s Harpley estate, is one of 50 Lend Lease employees around the world taking part in the marathon.
To be eligible, each employee had to fundraise $2500 for Team for Kids, an organisation that helps underprivileged kids in New York.
