Wyndham’s public libraries will receive more than $1.51 million in funding to buy new books and collection items, run online services and deliver outreach programs.
The funding, announced recently by Minister for Local Government Shaun Leane and Werribee MP Tim Pallas, is part of a record $56.9 million investment by the state government in Victoria’s libraries for the 2020-21 financial year.
Mr Pallas said that libraries in Wyndham and across the state provided “tremendous support” to communities during the coronavirus pandemic, through measures such as virtual storytimes for children, book delivery and partnerships with Meals on Wheels.
“The pandemic really brought home the value Wyndham libraries bring to our community,” Mr Pallas said.
“Libraries strengthen and enrich our Wyndham community.
“They’re places all of us can benefit from and they have a life-long impact.”
Mr Leane said the state gpvernment funding would “ensures libraries have the resources they need to keep up the amazing work they’ve been doing.
“Libraries really do change lives and they are about so much more than books,” he said.
Victoria is home to 276 permanent library branches, 31 mobile library services and 71 other library outlets.
More than 2.1 million library members are registered in the state.
Wyndham council allocated $9.37 million to run the municipality’s libraries in its 2020-21 budget.
Wyndham’s libraries are free to join and are open to all ages. You can become a library member online at www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/services/libraries/using-library/how-join-borrow or at any of the council’s five library branches.
