Access road prompts ‘rat run’ fears

A group of Sanctuary Lakes residents are furious about an access road being built between two estates that they say will create a traffic rat run and compromise safety.

Residents from the South Shore Gardens estate are concerned that the access road, which will link their estate with the neighbouring The Address estate via Middle Park Drive, will turn their street into a rat run for those wanting to bypass traffic at the Sneydes Road and Point Cook Road intersection.

Residents say they’ve been told the access road is for rubbish trucks and emergency services to move between the two estates, but believe it will compromise estate security.

Brett Hernadi said residents paid a $2500 annual body corporate fee for amenity such as enhanced security, adding that there was only one entrance and exit into South Shore Gardens.

A petition bearing about 40 signatures calling on Wyndham council to stop building the access road has been lodged and will be tabled at the June council meeting.

Wyndham council would not comment on the issue when contacted by Star Weekly last week, saying a statement would pre-empt any decisions made at the upcoming meeting.

Sanctuary Lakes Resort Services chief executive Tony Ferreri said the organisation had opposed the access road ever since the idea was proposed in 2010.

He met with Wyndham council mayor Henry Barlow and deputy mayor Kim McAliney last week to voice the residents’ concerns.

“Yes, we had a meeting, but it was more around stating a bunch of facts, and not really negotiating anything.”
