Do you know an unsung Wyndham hero who deserves recognition?

Nominations for the Wyndham Community Volunteer Awards are now open and Wyndham council is calling on residents to recommend friends, relatives or neighbours who have made significant contributions.

Award categories include community engagement and community wellbeing, culture, arts and tourism, environment and sustainability, sports and recreation, young volunteer of the year, and community group.

Winners, to be announced on August 19, will be in the running for citizen of the year awards, which will be presented on the same evening.

Mayor Adele Hegedich says the awards are an opportunity to recognise and celebrate people who have made a significant contribution to the Wyndham community.

“The volunteers’ work may have begun this past year or they may have served their community over a number of years – either way, we want to hear their story.

“These people are heroes among us, giving their time and expertise to our community so that it may grow and flourish.

“They deserve to be recognised and congratulated on their efforts.”

Hoppers Crossing resident Walter Villagonzalo, who founded the Migrant Hub, took out last year’s top honour.

The father of five and grandfather of four was selected for his 20 years of community service, namely at the hub, which is a social enterprise to help newly arrived migrants assimilate into mainstream Australian society. It has been operating since 2009.
