Wyndham council has been installed battery-powered hybrid stud lights in footpaths around Soho Village, Paradise Parade and Alamanda Wetlands in Point Cook to boost safety.
Victorian company Omnigrip provided 15 lights that sit flush within the paths, illuminating during the night.
Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said: “These lights were specifically chosen with the local natural habitat in mind, as Council considered that overhead street lighting could be visually unattractive and impede on surrounding natural habitats. These stud lights are subtle and effective and a great innovation in Soho Village.”
Wyndham’s community safety portfolio holder, Cr Susan McIntyre, said: “As Wyndham marks Community Safety Month this October, it’s great to know that we are continuing to build an overall sense of safety within the community with improvements such as this.”
“These new stud lights will make this precinct feel safer.
“We know that the lack of light in this area has been a concern for our local traders and residents and we are thrilled that as Soho Village re-opens for business, we are able to deliver a further sense of safety for evening visitors.”
The chosen lights offer two battery technologies that combine solar power with a backup internal battery that will ensure the lights remain bright, even after more than seven sunless days.
“These lights are cost-effective, environmentally friendly and low maintenance, with the internal batteries predicted to only need to be changed in around five to ten years depending on the quality of daily solar recharges,” Cr Hegedich said.
The multi-directional stud lights are fitted with sensors that automatically turn on at dusk.
The installation of these stud lights did not disrupt the local wildlife and green habitats in the Alamanda Wetlands.
