Shock, and then elation, hit Werribee Masters Football Club after a recent win – one three years in the making.
The over-45s team, which competes in the AFL Masters Victorian Metropolitan League, earlier this month clinched its first victory since the club’s Legends Team beat Melbourne in 2015.
With a home ground advantage at Wyndham Vale Reserve, the team, currently fifth on the eight-team ladder, beat Chirnside Park by 53 points.
Coach Michael Byrne congratulated his players for a strong game.
“With the team being strengthened by the inclusion of a few key players, we were able to out-play the opposition for most of the game,” Byrne said. “We had many good players across every line … players willing to put their bodies on the line, setting an example for others to follow.
“We are improving with each game and, with a little more confidence, will win many more this season.”
Team member John Crennan said the players’ hard work was starting to pay off.
“To get the win shows we are improving and on the right track,” Crennan said.
“The culture around our club is good, but will get better as we continue to see more positives and win a few more games. Also, the drinks taste better after a win.”
