Werribee will become home to buildings up to 20 storeys high and 1400 additional carparks as part of a council project to revitalise the CBD.
Four parcels of council-owned land in the town’s centre will be sold off to developers to create a multi-storey carpark, 300 residential apartments, 5000 square metres of office space, and retail and dining outlets.
One hundred serviced apartments – a bid to accommodate visitors – are also part of the project. As are a childcare centre and a community learning hub.
Two sites are at Cherry and Synnot streets, and two overlook the Werribee River in Barnes Place and Comben Drive.
Council vibrant city centres manager Steve Bentley said the council had been strategically planning the project, valued about $250 million, since 2013.
While details are scarce, Star Weekly can confirm that more than one developer will be involved in the project.
Mr Bentley said the developers selected to spearhead the project were chosen after agreeing to “strict conditions” around the council’s vision for the city centre.
He said the height of the buildings had not been finalised, but would be in accordance with the Werribee City Centre Structure Plan. The plan stipulates the building at Cherry Street can be up to seven storeys high, Synnot Street up to 10, and the two riverside sites, up to 20 storeys high. The council will have significant input into the overall developments.
Mr Bentley said the council would target both new and existing businesses to occupy the development.
Wyndham Business and Tourism Association president Nick Christou said the project was a positive move.
