UPDATE: An elderly man whose car struck a tree in Werribee South on Thursday has died in hospital on Friday morning.
The 75-year-old Norlane man was travelling south on Diggers Road when he lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road about 4.40am.
The car hit a tree and partially landed in an irrigation channel of waist-deep water.
It took CFA crews half an hour to free the man from the car.
He suffered head and chest injuries and was airlifted to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition, where he died.
The man’s death brings the state’s road toll up to 96 for this year.
