Crash probe after car charges into Tarneit playground

Police were relieved that nobody was killed or seriously injured after an out-of-control car ploughed into a Tarneit playground last week.

It is believed that just before 2.30pm on March 11, the driver of a 4WD in Prospect Drive left the road before travelling about 30 metres and crashing into play equipment.

Acting Sergeant Phil Monteduro, of Werribee police, said it was “extremely fortunate” there were no families or children using the playground.

“The incident is still under investigation, but from what we understand it appears distraction may have been a factor,” he said.

“Somehow the driver has veered across the road and we suspect that once they’ve hit the kerb, instead of hitting the brake they’ve hit the accelerator.

“At that time of the afternoon, there could have been mothers with young children around, so it’s just very lucky nobody was hurt.”

A woman in her 50s has been assisting police with their inquiries.
