Car park chaos leads to review at Werribee, Hoppers Crossing stations

Parking restrictions will be reviewed around Werribee and Hoppers Crossing railway stations as growing numbers of commuters scramble to find spaces in surrounding residential streets.

But Wyndham council has no immediate plans to address the increasing congestion caused by a shortage of parking at Williams Landing station.

As previously reported by Star Weekly, Point Cook businesses have abandoned Wallace Avenue because of the traffic chaos caused by a lack of parking at the station, where there’s a capacity of just 500 spaces.

Desperate commuters have resorted to leaving their vehicles on both sides of Wallace Avenue, in carparks reserved for businesses and on vacant land adjoining the Palmers Road overpass at the base of the footbridge over the Princes Freeway.

In response to rail commuters using its carpark, Masters Home Improvement at Williams Landing has employed an attendant to monitor usage.

Council chief executive Kerry Thompson said that at this stage the mix of no-stopping, two-hour parking and all-day parking zones on Wallace Avenue was appropriate.

“These varying parking zones also help to maintain safe sight lines for drivers and help to ensure access is available to businesses in the area,” she said.

“However, Wyndham City is willing to review the situation should a specific issue be raised.

“The provision and formalisation of commuter parking in [the vacant land adjoining the overpass] would require discussion and agreement between Vic- Roads and Public Transport Victoria.

“Parking restrictions are in place in streets around Hoppers Crossing station and those surrounding Werribee station.

“Wyndham City intends to review the extent that commuter parking may have extended past the streets with these restrictions and consider options based on that review.

“Any alterations to the parking situation around Hoppers Crossing and Werribee stations need to take into consideration that the Regional Rail Link will operate from June this year.

“It’s anticipated that Regional Rail Link services will reduce at least some of the commuter parking demand at Werribee, Hoppers Crossing and Williams Landing with [Tarneit and Wyndham Vale] stations positioned within walking distance of many Wyndham residents and each with 1000 carpark spaces available.”
