Planning is under way to redevelop the Bayview Park, Point Cook, pirate ship playground that was destroyed by fire in September last year.
Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said designs for the park redevelopment were presented to a community meeting earlier this month and would be available for residents to view until March.
“The redevelopment of Bayview Park will bring life back to a much-loved public space,” he said.
“It was such a shame to see the park destroyed last year, but we will rebuild it into an even better place for Point Cook families to have fun and enjoy the outdoors.”
Developer Villawood Properties opened the playground at the $1.5 million Bayview Park in 2008.
The playground attracted controversy the following year when several children sustained injuries on its 20-metre high slide.
Following last year’s fire, Villawood Properties executive director Rory Costelloe said that despite early problems the park had become “one of the most famous playgrounds’’ in Melbourne.
Residents living around Bayview Park were asked for their views on the redevelopment, with a community survey undertaken in December last year.
Schools and kindergartens in the area have submitted drawings and ideas for the park and what they would like to see there in future.
“This gave us a great starting point, but we still need to make sure we’ve got it right in the community’s eyes. So we’re putting it out once again for review,” Cr Maynard said.
“We want all residents to have their say on this redevelopment project to ensure we are providing the best open spaces possible for the Wyndham community.”
A steering committee has been appointed, with its three members to act as a voice for residents ahead of the park’s redevelopment, which is expected to begin in July.
