Readers want multi-storey car park at Williams Landing station

Parking at Williams Landing train station is a long-running issue.

A multi-storey carpark must be built at Williams Landing railway station to help ease commuter congestion, according to Star Weekly readers.

Their demands come in response to our February 18 story about Point Cook businesses abandoning Wallace Avenue because of increasing traffic chaos, which is due to a shortage of parking spots at Williams Landing station, where there are just 500 spaces.

One reader wrote:

“Why would anybody in their right mind have planned a carpark for only 500 cars? I would have built a multi-level carpark for at least 1500 cars from the very beginning.”

As revealed in our story, desperate all-day commuters have resorted to parking on both sides of Wallace Avenue, which is separated from the station by the Princes Freeway.

The commuters are parking in spaces reserved for businesses and on vacant land adjoining the Palmers Road overpass, at the base of the footbridge.

Direct Vet Services’ Karen Davies said that with carparks outside businesses on Wallace Avenue regularly being occupied by all-day commuters, she knew of one business that had opted to relocate, while others had considered installing boom gates or parking attendants.

In response to its carpark being used by rail commuters, Masters Home Improvement at Williams Landing has employed a parking attendant to “monitor” its usage.

A spokeswoman for the store said the carpark was private property and reserved solely for its customers.

“Unfortunately, this has not been the case in the past few weeks,” she said.

“We understand that this is an issue for our customers and we are currently working with [Wyndham] council to find a solution.”

Nathan Blackburne, state manager of Williams Landing developer Cedar Woods Victoria, said the company would continue to speak with the council about parking signage within the estate.

Last week, Public Transport Victoria spokes- woman Andrea Duckworth said Williams Landing station had one of the largest carparks in the metropolitan rail network, with parking for about 500 cars.
