Werribee brigade fires up for century celebrations

It’s a birthday party 100 years in the making.

Werribee fire brigade kicked off its centenary celebrations in style last weekend, with volunteer firefighters from across Victoria competing in Australian Day championships at Galvin Park.

Brigades from as far away as Swan Hill and Mildura took part in the two-day event, testing members’ skills and fitness against each other and the clock, and using a range of firefighting equipment, including hoses and ladders.

The festivities continued on Saturday night as 26 brigades took part in a torchlight procession along Watton Street, Werribee.

Werribee brigade captain Michael Wells said the march was a humbling experience.

“Several of our members who have been with the brigade for more than 50 years led the procession and for them it was quite emotional to be acknowledged, not only by their peers but by the community,” he said.

“It was a privilege to have so many colleagues come down and take part. It was a very successful weekend,” Mr Wells said.

“We’re one of the largest volunteer fire brigades in the state and certainly one of the busiest, and we’re one of the fastest growing municipalities in the country, so we’re unique.

“As well as firefighting, we’ve led the way with our professionalism, and our road rescue team has showcased its skills around the world, so that’s something of which the Wyndham community can be proud,” he said.

“We’re always looking for new members, so we encourage people to drop by the station and get involved.”

The brigade’s 100th celebrations will continue with an open day on February 28 at the station on the corner of Anderson and Gibbons streets, Werribee.
