Distinguished Australian scientist Suzanne Cory was the guest speaker at the third annual Barry Jones Oration, held at Werribee Mansion last week.
The Wyndham council event attracted more than 110 people, including business leaders, councillors, retired MPs including Ralph Willis and human rights lawyer Julian Burnside.
In her speech, Professor Cory (pictured), a molecular biologist and director of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research from 1996 to 2009, spoke about the need to transform thinking about science and how Australia needed to invest in science and new technology.
The Barry Jones Oration is aimed at raising the profile and importance of learning and skills development, innovation, creativity and technology in Wyndham. Each year a high-profile speaker is invited to make the oration.
A quiz champion, author and former federal minister for science and technology, Barry Jones was Lalor MP from 1977 to 1998.
