The federal government will spend more than $5 million in the next five years to help build some of Wyndham’s biggest road projects.
The council has received $5.43 million from the government’s Roads To Recovery program.
Mayor Bob Fairclough said the council planned to spend $28.9 million on roads and pavements this financial year and would put the Roads To Recovery funds towards some of those projects.
Included in the council’s roads budget for 2014-15 is $4.5 million to build Armstrong Road between Greens and Ballan roads, $1.76 million to upgrade Leakes Road between Tarneit and Davis roads, $1.25 million to build Black Forest Road between McGrath and Armstrong roads, and $1 million to upgrade the intersection of Forsyth and Leakes roads.
But Cr Fairclough said more government funding was needed to address the city’s infrastructure shortfalls.
Senator Michael Ronaldson said the funding would make a difference in building roads, repairing streets and creating better access across the community.
“Roads To Recovery is set up for councils to make road spending decisions based on local needs – without interference from Canberra – to ensure that funding is truly directed to where it’s most needed,” he said.
“The Roads To Recovery program enables councils to prioritise roads funding to invest in the infrastructure which keeps our drivers safe and strengthens economic growth.
“Through Roads To Recovery, the Australian government is supporting our councils with the ongoing maintenance of road infrastructure, facilitating greater access, improving safety, and driving economic and social advances.”
