Students from Manor Lakes P-12 College have rolled up their sleeves to help a Wyndham Vale family in need.
An initiative of Wyndham Rotary’s Interact club, the volunteer brigade blitzed the backyard of a chronically ill mother and her five children last week as part of its commitment to make
a difference. The student team worked tirelessly to transform the backyard, mowing long grass and trimming edges with the help of Rotary club members.
Teacher and Interact club co-ordinator Narelle Bean said the students took to the challenge with gusto.
“It was a great opportunity for them to get into the community, helping local citizens, and they’re looking forward to organising another day soon,” she said.
Wyndham Rotary community director John Campbell said students also made over the backyard of Wyndham Vale’s Glenda Dyson, whose battle with Parkinson’s disease was featured in Star Weekly last month.
Ms Dyson was diagnosed with Parkinson’s 13 years ago, aged 34, but since then her condition has become progressively worse.
Her son Luke, 15, is now her carer, balancing school with tending to his mother’s needs.
“She’s over the moon. She now says she has the best garden in the street,” Mr Campbell said.
