Two Point Cook residents have delved into the unknown, driving a “mystery route” through the Queensland outback to raise money for the Cancer Council.
Keyur Lavingia and Nishit Vaitha are part of the five-day Mystery Box Rally, which ends today.
Since Saturday, the pair have been one of 50 teams making their way from Brisbane to a mystery location in a car they bought at auction on Friday night.
Teams were not told the route they would be driving until Saturday morning.
Mr Lavingia said he and Mr Vaitha took part in the rally because they wanted to help make a difference.
“We’re inspired by the work that the Cancer Council does, so we wanted to raise money for them,” he said. “The more people who know about Cancer Council the greater their impact.”
Before they could compete in the rally, they had to raise at least $3000, which was then used to bid on a car to drive through the outback.
Mystery Box Rally founder James Freeman said the event was a different way of raising money to help fight cancer.
“Given that one in two people will get cancer before the age of 85, it’s unfortunately a disease that has affected most Australians in some way,” he said.
